Meranus is one of the 8 warriors and Max's animal spirit, but to the other Warriors he is the Horned Monkey due to the fact that he is always related to Tino, usually as an older brother (Tino being Tech's animal spirit)
Originally the new world only had 4 elemental natures meaning noone was born as a metal, lightning, plant, or ice user in the ages before metal was created and used making Meranus known as the Warrior of Power.
As a spirit Meranus is very powerful. Despite never helping his host in any way people that become his hosts do amazing things. War gods, legendary fighters, one of his hosts even introduced metal to the world since Metal is not natural. They were all like Meranus, head-strong, independent, tough, and looked out only for themselves, and Meranus hated each and every one of them.
Meranus wasn't Max's original spirit, but because Maria (Tech and Max's mom) asked Tino to be Tech's spirit and guardian Meranus told Max's original spirit to get lost because he is always Tino's family no matter what. Max's human spirit was bearly comparable with Meranus, thinks like Max being a coward, and a mama's boy made their bind extremely weak and Meranus had to use his power just to stay inside of Max's body, but the night Rai was sealed and Max jumped between Kuro and Tech Meranus did something he had never done before and saved Max's life, he took most of Kuro's sword blow so that Max wouldn't get sliced in half. The moment Max got the determination to protect Tech and forgot all of his fears he became compatible for Meranus and the two bound together officially making Meranus Max's animal spirit.
Meranus never helped Max growing up. Max had to learn alot on his own and develop his own strength, after all Max was by far the weakest host Meranus ever had and Meranus did not like that. Yet despite Meranus trying to detatch himself from Max Max only grew more attached, piercing his nose, getting a mohawk and liking alot of the things Meranus likes despite Max never seeing or talking to Meranus.
I really need to get on with my story. I want to write more but shouldn't XD
